Asma Jahangir passed away at the age of 66 on Sunday due to cardiac arrest. She was the former president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
Asma Jahangir had won many national as well as international awards including Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 1995, Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2010, and various others. She was co-founder of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and also chaired it.
She was elected as SCBA president on October 27, 2010.
She was also an outspoken critic of the powerful military establishment, including during her stint as the first-ever female leader of Pakistan’s top bar association.
Jahangir was arrested in 2007 by the government of then-military ruler Pervez Musharraf and held under house arrest. In 2012 she claimed her life was in danger from the feared Inter Services Intelligence spy agency.
